Refugee Sponsorship Program

Since 2017, the Prairie Somali Canadian Community Centre has teamed up with community members to sponsor refugee relatives overseas.

In a world of ever-increasing uncertainty, more and more people are getting displaced from their homelands and becoming refugees elsewhere. This has greatly impacted our community members in the Prairies whose loved ones are among those displaced by wars and other man-made calamities.

According to a report published by Worldvision.org citing the United Nations’ Refugee Agency (UNHCR) there are about “79.5 million people who have been forcibly displaced around the world. That’s the most since World War II”. Although many of those displaced still remain within their home countries, but there are about “26 million people worldwide who fled to other countries as refugees”. World Vision further reports that there are another 4.2 million refugee claimants around the globe whose status have not been declared yet (World Vision 2020). And sadly, more than half of the world’s refugee populations are children.

The PSCCC is doing its small part to help alleviate refugee crisis around the world and bring families together. We are teaming up with community members and refugee family relatives here in the Prairies, as well as community-based businesses to help raise the necessary funds to sponsor refugees from overseas. We do also have settlement and integration programs in place to assist the refugees when they arrive in the country.

We have been very fortunate to welcome our first new arrivals in 2019 and 2020 here in Saskatchewan.
